Milan 14 August 2010

Milan is a bit of a step down from Zurich unfortunately. The Swiss are very clean and precise with everything. The only problem we had with the Swiss is that, whilst the non-smoking message hasn't really hit Europe generally (the Swiss only banned it in restaurants in May), the Swiss haven't really received the message yet generally. We reckon 80% of the Swiss adult population smokes.

The northern Italians are rougher around the edges than the Swiss. There doesn't seem to be a lot of pride taken in Milan generally. Their historic sights are mixed in with high rise residential areas and their classy shopping areas for the most part are as well. We are out of the city in the northern area because I didn't want to drive in the inner cities and our hotel is planted in amongst largely residential units. The hotel is new and quite big but it's sort of out of place where it is.

We've been doing well though in our selection of eating places in Sindelfingen, Zurich and here. Went to a little restaurant last night recommended by the hotel and just around the corner. We walked there in the afternoon to have a look and, from the outside, it looked like the back end of a Sydney fish market, all graffitied etc, and looked like it'd seat 6 at a stretch. We braved it and went there anyway and it was a bit of a Dr Who's tardis. Quite a bit bigger inside and very nice. Male and female waiters with bow ties. We both enjoyed our meals. Suffice it to say we're going back tonight.
